Getting To Know Oscar Langburne

22-year-old Oscar Langburne is best known for his smooth surfing style and distinctive long blonde hair.

But there’s more to him than just that. A passionate traveler and music lover, Oscar approaches life with a genuine curiosity and embodies The Search intuitively. To mark the release of his latest edit, Ever Changing Moods, we caught up with Oscar to chat about the project and get to know the stylemaster from the Central Coast a little better.

Where did you grow up? When did you first learn to surf?
I grew up at Avoca Beach on the New South Wales Central Coast and started getting pushed on a foamie in the whitewash about 6 years old. I sort of stopped for a few years and then started again when I was around 11 and got hooked.

Who is your biggest surf inspiration?
That's such a hard question as I've been inspired by a lot of surfers. I guess the thing that I really like is the unbroken line that people like Machado, Lopez, Curren, Rasta, Steph, Craig Ando, Creed etc. all have in common. Whether they're doing radical shit, or not much at all, that's what I like.

Did you ever consider pursuing surfing competitively?
Pretty early on I knew the comp aspect of surfing didn't fit with my personality and my pretty casual approach. I would get annihilated. I've done a few twin fin, single fin and team type of comps but purely for fun and to hang with good people.

You seem to have done a lot of travelling over the years. What is it that you love about travelling?
Yeh I've been really fortunate and love getting to travel, maybe not sitting in airports or being homesick. That's all part of it though and I just give myself a bit of a reality check in those moments. There are definitely way bigger things in the world to be getting upset over than complaining about waiting in an airport with some surfboards. I just really enjoy the adventure and unknown of going somewhere for the first time and experiencing the culture and checking out things that aren't surf related. In terms of wave quality, it's hard to beat Indo.

Where is the next place on your list to go that you haven’t been to yet?
There's so many places I haven't been to but would really like to check out. Peru, Chile, spots in the Mediterranean, Sri Lanka... even Norway. My cousins live there, and I know there's some surf spots too.

Tell us about “Ever Changing Moods”. How did the project come about?
I first started thinking about doing a project pretty much as soon as I joined Rip Curl. The original plan was to film and cruise over a few months if the surf was worth it and maybe try to visit a couple of new places like Japan and Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, a knee injury and dengue fever took me out so I changed the idea and went to Indo. Harry Dott, who filmed most of it and did the edit, was insane to travel and work with. He was always looking for different angles, lighting, mood, timing the music etc. I think he's got a really creative way of seeing things and approaches surfing and filming as an artform.

If you could go on a surf trip with any 3 people, living or dead (surfers or non- surfers) who would you pick and why.
I'd take one musician, a chef and a surfer.
Paul Weller – I think he's stayed pretty cool and would have some rad stories about the music scene.
Anthony Bourdain - not only a chef but he obviously lived a wild life. I think he'd treat everyone the same regardless of who you were.
Creed McTaggart – He surfs nuts, doesn't hassle, cool guy. I actually used one of his songs as the first tune in the new movie.
