Surfing Sun Protection

18 December 2019

Everything you need to know about staying sun safe in the line-up this summer.

It’s that time of year again – the holidays are in full swing, the ocean is the warmest it’s been all year, and the summer sun has started to get just that little bit spicier. At Rip Curl we’re all about ensuring you, and your family, are equipped to stay out and enjoy those long days at the beach and in the surf – which is why we’ve put such an emphasis on staying sun safe.

So, what are the best ways to ensure you’re protected from the sun, while you’re in the surf?

1. Wear a Surf Shirt or a Surf Suit
2. Wear a surf hat, and keep a hat for the beach
3. Use Sport Sunscreen
4. Zinc Up!
5. Bring overswim
6. Aloe Up!

Wear a Rash vest or a Surf Suit

If there’s one piece of advice we can give you when it comes to surfing sun protection, it’s that you need the right equipment when you’re in the water. Rather than just wearing boardies or a bikini, try wearing a long sleeve surf shirt or a surf suit. Our super soft and lightweight surf suit and surf shirt material offers 50+ sun protection and will keep you confident in even the hottest peak of the day.

Wear a Surf Hat

Surf hats offer protection dual protection – not only are you keeping the skin on your face and neck safe from those UV rays, but you’re also keeping your eyes safe from squinting into the bright sun for hours on end.

Use Sport Sunscreen

This one really goes without saying… but, using the right sunscreen for surfing and being active in the water is probably the most crucial component to sun safety in the line-up.

Zinc Up!

After your sunscreen has absorbed into your skin, we highly recommend layering up with zinc in the critical zones on your face. There’s nothing worse than coming in from a long surf, and realising your sunscreen has melted off!

Bring Overswim

After a long session in the surf, you might want to spend some time relaxing on the sand with your friends or family. And that afternoon sun, well… it can get you! Make sure you can stay comfortable on the beach with something to throw over your swimwear, and protect your chest and arms from those pesky UVs.

Aloe Up!

After a long day at the beach, no matter how sun safe you’re staying, your skin might feel a little crispy. Take proper care of your skin by reviving it with aloe vera, and you’ll wake up the next day feeling sunkissed… not sunburnt!
