Rip Curl surfers came from all over the globe to compete for their chance to shine on the world stage. Starting from 6.30am, Reo Inaba (JPN), Oney Anwar (INDO), Xavier Huxtable (AUS), Jacob Willcox (AUS) and Samuel Pupo (BRA) battled their way through to the pointy end, making a washing machine ocean look rideable.
In the final it was Jacob Willcox and Samuel Pupo. With no priority and three minutes left to go, Jacob needed just over a three-point ride to take the lead over Pupo, but the ocean just didn’t deliver.
And so, Sammy Pupo not only claimed his first entry into a World Tour event, but also became the first Brazilian ever to make it into the big leagues at the Rip Curl Pro…
